Redlining

Redlining is a discriminatory practice in real estate and lending that involves systematically denying or limiting financial services, including loans and insurance, to residents of certain neighborhoods based on their racial or ethnic composition or socioeconomic status. The term originated from the practice of drawing red lines on maps to delineate areas deemed undesirable for investment or lending, often because they were populated by minority groups.

Redlining has its roots in the early to mid-20th century, when government agencies, banks, and insurance companies engaged in racially discriminatory practices that marginalized minority communities, particularly African American and Latino neighborhoods. These practices resulted in systemic disinvestment, economic inequality, and segregation, as minority residents were denied access to affordable housing and financial resources.
The consequences of redlining are long-lasting and continue to affect communities today. Redlined neighborhoods typically experience lower property values, limited access to credit and investment, inferior public services and infrastructure, and higher rates of poverty and crime. These disparities perpetuate cycles of inequality and contribute to the persistent wealth gap between racial and ethnic groups.

While redlining is now illegal under the Fair Housing Act and other anti-discrimination laws, its effects persist in many communities, and efforts to address its legacy continue. Initiatives aimed at promoting fair lending practices, increasing access to affordable housing, and revitalizing redlined neighborhoods are essential for promoting equitable development and combating the lasting effects of redlining.
