Redlining
Redlining is a discriminatory practice in real estate and lending that involves systematically denying or limiting financial services, including loans and insurance, to residents of certain neighborhoods based on their racial or ethnic composition or socioeconomic status. The term originated from the practice of drawing red lines on maps to delineate areas deemed undesirable for investment or lending, often because they were populated by minority groups.
While redlining is now illegal under the Fair Housing Act and other anti-discrimination laws, its effects persist in many communities, and efforts to address its legacy continue. Initiatives aimed at promoting fair lending practices, increasing access to affordable housing, and revitalizing redlined neighborhoods are essential for promoting equitable development and combating the lasting effects of redlining.
