Pur Autre Vie

In real estate, “pur autre vie” is a French term meaning “for another’s life.” It refers to a type of life estate that is measured by the lifetime of a person other than the life tenant (the person who holds the life estate). For example, if a property is granted to a person “for the life of another,” the person holding the estate has the right to use and benefit from the property for as long as the specified other person is alive. Once that person dies, the life estate terminates, and the property typically reverts to another designated party or the original grantor.
